For over 23 years, Meretrio has been counted among the most original voices in contemporary Brazilian instrumental music. By combining Brazilian traditions with jazz, chamber music, and modern improvisation, the trio has developed a distinctive and deeply expressive musical language. Throughout its career, Meretrio has released eleven albums and undertaken extensive tours across Europe, Brazil, and Australia. The album released in 2017 was selected by DownBeat Magazine as one of the "Best Albums of the Year," underscoring the trio's international recognition. Beyond the classic trio lineup, Meretrio has collaborated with outstanding soloists such as Pedro Assad (piano), Heinrich von Kalnein (saxophone/flute), Marcelo Coelho (saxophone), Daniel D'Alcântara (trumpet), and Josué dos Santos (saxophone). Furthermore, the ensemble's music has been presented in expanded configurations—from quintets and nonets to large-scale big band projects. In 2026, Meretrio returns to Europe with a program that presents highlights from its extensive repertoire while looking toward the future. At selected concerts, the trio is joined by two exceptional Brazilian musicians: Chico Santana (percussion) and Joander Cruz (saxophone). During the tour, this special quintet project will also record a new album, planned for release in 2027. Whether as a trio or quintet, Meretrio continues to explore the great stylistic diversity of Brazilian music. Choro, contemporary jazz, chamber music, and even progressive rock influences blend naturally into the ensemble's distinctive sound. With their original compositions, the musicians create a sonic universe that honors tradition while simultaneously expanding the boundaries of their own musical language.
