Sofie Royer returns with a new album – After three critically acclaimed LPs, the Viennese musician's songwriting and production have become more complex and refined, her lyrics sharper and increasingly humorous. before/after is her most striking work to date: an album that tackles the challenges of an artist's life and combines personal self-reflection with social observation. Sofie has evolved from a lo-fi producer to an established pop musician who has already performed as support for Lana Del Rey, Air and LCD Soundsystem. Her new album was produced together with producers Matt Cohn (including for SZA and The Weeknd), Jorgen Odegard (Sabrina Carpenter) and Eli Hirsch (Suki Waterhouse). Yet she still doesn't quite know where she belongs. She doesn't hold back her criticism of the music industry: "I'm too pop for the art world, too indie darling for the mainstream." However, she directs her sharpest judgments at herself. On twelve catchy pop songs, Royer asks whether the conflicts between past and future aren't ultimately struggles with one's own self. "We are constantly caught in the tension between before and after," she explains. "These two states of time preoccupy us endlessly. But by remaining entangled in them, we often become our own greatest obstacle. In the state of before/after, it's ultimately always about the same conflict: you against yourself."
