In Masses and Power (1962), Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti describes his experiences with mass movements of the early 20th century and provides striking sociological and anthropological insights. Today, masses continue to mobilize, unite against injustice or for a better climate. They gather on social media, storm the Capitol, set cities ablaze, or flee. Director Wouter Van Looy and video artist Wim Catrysse drew on this work of world literature as inspiration for THE MASS MAN, developing a multimedia work about survival strategies in conflict. Wim Catrysse directs his camera at a place of conflict where violence and resistance stretch back millennia, where an seemingly unsolvable ideological and territorial conflict rages, leaving a grotesque trail of death and destruction that further tears apart the social fabric. The text by Peter Verhelst uses Canetti's masterwork as its foundation but shifts focus to today's world.
