Welcome to Sodom - Dein Smartphone ist schon hier
"Sodom" is what they call the part of Ghana's capital Accra that only those who must enter dare to go. The Agbogbloshie landfill is the final destination for computers, monitors and other electronic waste from Europe and around the world. Around 250,000 tons of discarded computers, smartphones, printers and other devices from a distant, electrified and digitalized world arrive here every year. Demand for the latest electronic accessories in the developed world is exploding. Manufacturers regularly report record sales. Yet these lifestyle products are often "out of fashion" and thus trash within a short time. Hundreds of thousands of them end up in Ghana, where children and teenagers break down electronic waste under the open sky. By melting old cables in pitch-black clouds of smoke, new raw materials are extracted. For some a "clean" business; for others, a toxic daily reality.
