Originally produced by Shima — keyboardist of the band Piper — the record was designed for a very specific purpose: the pursuit of the perfect summer tan. Released with tanning instructions\, oil recommendations and a promotional tie-in with Hawaiian Tropic\, it drifts between ambient\, new age and lifestyle soundtrack music\, built as an elegant backdrop for beaches\, pool parties and other seasonal rituals. Long forgotten outside a small circle of collectors\, For Light Tanning returns as a strikingly thorough document of late-1980s leisure culture — an album that leaves little room for ambiguity about its intended use.
