About the exhibition
In her exhibition Stellar Atmospheres, Miriam Hamann traces the work of those astrophysicists who mapped and classified the night sky around 1900. Their work laid the foundation for our understanding of the universe – yet remained long unrecognized. Based on hundreds of thousands of astronomical photographs, the so-called Harvard Computers developed systems that made the sky legible as an ordered field. In Stellar Atmospheres, Hamann translates these systematizations into artistic material and transforms them into sculptural form – between light and system, observation and abstraction, individual object and comparative cosmic order.
