With Nafas (breath), six musicians who have shaped the Vienna music scene for years and are equally at home on international stages come together. Natasha Mirković, Basma Jabr, Sakina Teyna and Golnar Shahyar unite in their voices stories, memories and experiences from different cultural spaces, layered and infused with great poetic presence. As composers, producers, singers and artistic boundary-crossers, they draw from musical traditions of the Middle East, the Balkans and Central Asia, without ever limiting themselves to origin or genre. Together with Mahan Mirarab on guitar and Amir Wahba on percussion, they create an open sonic space that brings improvisation, rhythm and narrative depth together. Between contemporary sound language, traditional influences and spontaneous musical encounter, a music unfolds that understands movement as principle – free, permeable and full of mutual attention. The six musicians first came together in this formation in 2018 and have collaborated in various projects ever since. Natasha Mirković moves effortlessly as a vocal artist between baroque, folk music, jazz and improvisation and counts among the most distinctive voices of contemporary European music. Syrian singer Basma Jabr combines traditional Arabic music with jazz and contemporary influences into a distinctive musical language. Sakina Teyna draws from the rich tradition of Kurdish storytelling and singing culture and merges it with contemporary musical forms of expression. Golnar Shahyar is among the defining voices of the contemporary and improvised music scene in Europe. Iranian guitarist and composer Mahan Mirarab combines Iranian musical traditions with jazz, chamber music and improvisation on his fretless guitar. Amir Wahba merges influences from North African, Brazilian and Cuban music with jazz and contemporary improvisation.
